Time is a funny thing, isn’t it? All yesterday, I had been planning on getting home after work, settling in to write out a blog post that wasn’t about RoW80, because, for the life of me, I was truly thinking that today was not Wednesday. I didn’t even up writing that post; I got home and I was just too tired, watched the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and then went to bed, figuring I’d write something in the morning because I should have a blog day anyway. First thing I do in the morning is check my emails, and there’s the check in post from Kait Nolan. I’m all, “What the fuck, why is it Wednesday? It’s not Wednesday!” But it is, indeed, Wednesday. So I guess I’m checking in again.
What makes this even more ridiculous for me is I remember before going to bed last night thinking, “Ugh, I work Wednesday night, booo,” because there’s a gelato special every Wednesday that sometimes makes my night a little rougher. So even though I acknowledged to myself that it was Wednesday, I still didn’t think of it as Wednesday in a RoW context. And I figured it out, too. I didn’t think it was Wednesday (despite knowing and acknowledging it was Wednesday), because my schedule for this week changed and I didn’t work Monday like I usually do, nor did I have Tuesday off like I usually do, so my perception was all shifted and what have you, thus proving that time is kind of dumb and basically just a strange construct everyone somehow agreed to place on their lives.
That said, let’s look at some goals and how I’ve been doing with them. I’m thinking of making a non-RoW post a weekly one, because I’ve been really, really failing at that one latly.
Monthly: Finish Fearless by the end of April. I’ve actually been really killing it on this one. Pumping out several pages a day, brushed past the half-way point, and, at this rate, I’ll easily get to the finish line in time. Especially since things are really reaching the climax now, which usually means a good flow in writing.
Weekly: Read one book a week; write one new short story a week. Also good here. I’ll probably finish Flowers for Algernon today, and then I’ll have to decide what to finish next. I haven’t started my story yet this week, but I’m currently mapping out an idea focused around a strange naked man with green skin stumbling into a village. I’ve got the premise, just trying to figure out where to take it.
Daily(ish). Submit one story per non-work day. I haven’t had a whole lot of time to touch this yet since my days have been mostly working days so far this week. But I’ve got Friday and Saturday to find homes for things, and plenty of stuff that needs to go out, anyway. So I’m none too worried. “A Song for the Underworld” came back recently, so that’s an option, too, though that one’s been rejected so much that it might be joining “Red and White” in the “just save it for your next short story collection” pile.
So that’s that. I usually don’t like writing up my posts in the morning because it knocks my focus out a whack, but I think I did pretty good with it this time. Now it’s just a matter of whether or not my computer will cooperate enough to let me check in on some of my fellow RoWers here, which I’ve been wanting to do lately but this computer, man…the computer…
Happy writing, everyone!
