Literary Journals.

I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of sending in pieces to literary journals for publication again. After a stream of rejections and a general lack of new material to send, it can be a challenge to just get up the motivation to try to change one of the previously rejected stories and send it elsewhere, but it’s essential to get past that hole in the road and keep going. It might take 100 rejections. It might take 1000. 10,000. But there might still be that one…

So, let me turn this into a discussion and see if anyone out there reading this has any suggestions. Have you had much luck with submitting your work to journals? If so, which ones? What do you feel they look for and what to you, personally, look for when reading a story? Do you have a favourite journal you like to read? I know that’s one thing I need to do more of. I need to read these journals and see what’s fresh in the writing world now that I’m not being constantly surrounded by it like I was in college. I’m just in a spot right now, financially, where I can’t feel I’m justified in shelling over the money for magazines…I should find some “Best of…” compilations for the last few years. Those are all really good reads and look nice on a bookshelf besides.

But I can do this. I can get out of this hole and keep sending my stories out and improving on them and, eventually, they’ll find a home.
